Born on April 16th, 1993, Chancelor Johnathan Bennett popularly known as Chance the Rapper is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer, actor, activist, and philanthropist. The rapper was born in Chicago, Illinois, and has gained traction for his rap music which has been widely accepted and listened to globally.

The star’s father, Ken Williams-Bennett was an aide to Harold Washington, the late Chicago Mayor. He was also an aide to the then-senator Barack Obama. His mother Lisa Bennett worked for the Illinois Attorney General. 

His Career

The star was motivated by Michael Jackson who he exclusively listened to on cassettes until the fifth grade. The rapper also grew up in a house where his parents were always playing the music of popular musicians such as Sam Cooke, Billie Holiday, and other artists in the jazz and gospel genres. 

Chance the Rapper started to listening to hip-hop after vibing to Kanye West’s Through the Wire on the radio while walking through Hyde Park Chicago. Soon after he bought Kanye’s College Dropout Album and it inspired him to begin rapping in the 6th Grade. The rapper considers Kanye to be one of the musicians with a huge influence on his music career. Both Chance the Rapper and Kanye West met in August 2014 at Bonnaroo Music Festival. 

Chance formed an instrumentality duo with a friend in his high school days at Jones College Prep High School. Many of his earliest performances were at the YOUmedia Lyricist Loft at Harold Washington Library in Chicago. The star met with the then Mayor of Chicago, Richard M. Daley after he emerged as the first runner-up in a local music contest. The star spent most of his junior year and a part of his senior year preparing drafts for his official debut in 2012, 10 Day which he released after he was suspended for ten days after being caught smoking cannabis.

The star started to gain traction on mainstream music in 2013 after he released his second mixtape, Acid Rap, but it was his third mixtape Coloring Book that literally wrapped things up for the rapper in 2016. The mixtape earned Chance the Rapper three Grammy Awards, including the award for the Best Rap Album. His debut studio album, The Big Day was related on July 26, 2019.

Chance the Rapper is also a member of the Chicago collective Savermoney, and is the vocalist for the band known as The Social Experiment. The music star is also involved in social activism in the Chicago community where he resides. As of April 2021, Chance the Rapper’s net worth is estimated at $25 million.
